1.  The United Nations Resident Coordinator's Office in New Delhi has
reported that the earthquake which hit the Chamoli and Rudraprayag districts
in the State of Uttar Pradesh on 28 March was followed by tremor shocks
continuing up until 1 April. The damage caused by the earthquake is as
follows: 

   Chamoli district: 61 killed, 125 injured, 30 villages affected
   Rudraprayag district: 34 killed, 177 injured, 200 villages affected
   Bageshwar district: 19 injured
   Tehri Garhwal district: 5 killed, 60 injured, 10 villages affected
   Pauri Garhwal district: 13 injured, 564 villages affected

In total, 100 people were killed, 394 injured, 804 villages or 372,000 people
were affected, and over 21,100 houses destroyed. 

2.  Currently 74 relief centres are in operation: 53 in Chamoli, 9 in
Rudraprayag, 3 in Tehri Garhwal, 7 in Pauri Garhwal and 2 in Bageshwar.
Relief materials, including 4,000 food packages, have been distributed in the
affected area. 84 people have been transferred to hospitals and medical
centers. Tents, tarpaulins and foodstuffs are still being distributed. 

3.  The State Government of Uttar Pradesh has distributed relief supplies
worth USD 438,000: USD 333,333 for Chamoli, USD 71,400 for Rudraprayag, USD
16,300 for Tehri Garhwal and USD 17,000 for Bageshwar. 1,100 quintals of
wheat flour/rice have been distributed in Chamoli, and 100 quintals in
Rudraprayag.  The State Government has sent 31 medical teams and 47
ambulances to the affected area. The Ministry of Health has also dispatched
34 medical teams to Chamoli and Rudraprayag, and provided 40 ambulances to
Chamoli.  The State Government has announced that there are sufficient
medicines and medical staff in the area. 

4.  The Government has allocated USD 11.9 million for relief operations in
the districts concerned.  USD 1,190 will be disbursed from the Prime
Minister's Relief Fund to each earthquake victim's next of kin. The 
Central
Ministry of Rural Areas and Employment will provide USD 369,000 for the
construction of 900 houses for affected families who are below the poverty
line.  The Army, Air Force, Indo-Tibetan Border Police and Boarder Roads
Organization are assisting the State Government in rescue and relief
operations. 

5.  The Government of India has not made any appeal for international
assistance. 

6.  A relief and assessment team from the Indian Red Cross and the
International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies visited
Chamoli and three neighbouring towns.  Relief items including tarpaulins,
blankets, kitchen utensils, clothing, rice and cooking oil are being
distributed to 500 of the most vulnerable people of Chamoli. Additional
relief aid is currently being prepared for 4,000 beneficiaries. 

7.  USAID/BHR/OFDA is establishing a mission allowance of USD 25,000 to
contribute toward the Prime Minister's National Fund for relief to the
victims of the earthquake. 

8.  Action by Churches Together (ACT) made an appeal for USD 46,000 on 1
April to cover expenses for relief sets and tarpaulins for the affected
population. 

9.  OCHA is in close contact with the UN Resident Coordinator's Office in 
New Delhi in order to monitor further developments.
